Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) experienced a record-breaking month of August, welcoming over 1.4 million travelers. This milestone marks a significant increase in passenger traffic compared to previous years.
“We are thrilled to have served more than four million passengers this summer,” said Michael Landguth, President and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “Our commitment to enhancing the passenger experience has led to the addition of new airlines, nonstop destinations, advanced technology, and exciting dining options.”
Expanded International Flights
RDU’s international air travel continues to grow. Air Canada has doubled its nonstop service to Montreal, offering 14 weekly flights starting in May 2025. Additionally, the airport has introduced direct flights to Frankfurt, Panama City, and Mexico City, expanding its global reach.
New Dining Experiences
Two new restaurants, Crawford’s Genuine and Carolina Craft, recently opened in Terminal 2. Crawford’s Genuine offers American cuisine with a North Carolina twist, featuring locally sourced ingredients and dishes crafted by renowned chef Scott Crawford. Carolina Craft, an open-air bar, showcases local breweries and distillers, providing a unique dining experience with craft beer, cocktails, and charcuterie boards.
Biometric Technology
RDU has implemented biometric exit kiosks at 10 international gates in Terminal 2. These kiosks, part of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) initiative, utilize facial recognition technology to verify the identity of outbound international passengers. This touch-free technology aims to streamline the screening process while ensuring security. Passengers can opt out of biometric screening and undergo manual verification.
Runway Construction
RDU has secured a $10 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to replace Runway 5L-23R. This vital runway will serve as the region’s gateway to the West Coast and transatlantic destinations. The replacement project aims to maintain international connectivity and accommodate future gate expansion at Terminal 2.
